A Short Walk Around Newhalen

New building for Russian Orthodox Church-they're still working on it.

You can see the lake and the mountains in the background.

I took a walk and found the Russian Othodox Church and the graveyard.

There are only 10 miles of paved roads here.

This is Dump Lake, so called because it is across from the dump.  The kids don't swim in it because it has leeches. The brown dirt you see is where the 4-wheelers drive next to the road.

 This is Fireweed.  You can pick the flowers when they are open and boil them to make Fireweed jelly!

In the fall, the leaves and stems of the Fireweed turn bright red, hence the name.
